Girma Berta

Biography

Born in 1990, Girma Berta is a self-taught photographer whose work fuses street photography with fine art. He is a self-taught photographer who takes his images with an iPhone. His vibrant pictorial work documents his native city, the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. Also a graphic artist and a painter, he integrates these two media into his photographic work.

In the series Moving Shadows I and II, he highlights people in their everyday lives. He photographs individuals and then extracts their silhouettes, placing them against a bold, colourful background. He creates truly unique works of art that illustrate the contrasting colours and personalities of the streets of the capital.

Colour is very important in his work. These warm hues reflect his city, its fashion, its culture, its atmosphere. "I love contrasting colours", he explains.
