African art, with its vibrant colours, bold patterns and rich history, offers an endless source of inspiration for interior design. Incorporating elements of African art into our living spaces is not merely about enhancing the aesthetic; it is a celebration of culture and a tribute to a multifaceted continent.

 Textiles

There is a wide variety of rich and diverse fabrics:

  • Kente is a type of traditionally hand-woven fabric originating from Ghana in West Africa. It is renowned for its colourful and intricate patterns, as well as its vibrant colours. Historically, kente was worn by royalty and high-ranking individuals during important ceremonies.
  • Bogolan is a traditional textile from Mali. It is created using a fermented mud-dyeing technique and vegetable dyes to produce distinctive geometric patterns on cotton fabric. Its natural, earthy appearance blends well with contemporary interiors, adding a touch of authenticity and character.
  • Shweshwe is an indigo-dyed printed cotton fabric, often used in South African culture, particularly amongst the Xhosa and Sotho peoples. It is characterised by intricate and detailed patterns, usually in blue and white, although nowadays it is available in a variety of colours.
  • Wax is a cotton fabric featuring colourful patterns and vibrant prints.

These different textiles, rich in cultural significance, can be used to dress up your sofas, armchairs or cushions. They can be used to make curtains or blankets. Or even framed to create original wall art.

Natural and sustainable materials

Furniture and accessories made from wood, bamboo, rattan and raffia add an authentic touch.

  • Ashanti chairs and stools from Ghana are true works of art.
  • Senufo benches from Côte d’Ivoire are known for their flowing shapes and carvings of animals or human figures.
  • The famous Dogon doors convey aspects of everyday life through the depiction of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic elements.
  • A piece of furniture made from ebony, a precious and durable wood, is a guarantee of quality and sturdiness.

Art objects

  • The best known are, of course, the masks, which undeniably lend a majestic air but also a history that adds depth to your surroundings.
  • Bronze sculptures from Burkina Faso or Namji dolls from Cameroon can be placed on a console table or shelf to add a touch of sparkle and colour.
  • Woven baskets found in various African countries (Senegal, Rwanda, Kenya, etc.) are versatile and used both for storage and as decoration.
  • Pottery and ceramics are perfect for creating a rustic and authentic feel.

Paintings or wall art

African art possesses an intense and vibrant capacity for expression. It tells stories and evokes a variety of feelings, some of them profound. When thoughtfully arranged, it can become the soul of a space. This presentation creates an exceptional atmosphere and ambience that enchants visitors and fosters a dialogue between eras and cultures. Introducing a piece of African art into a modern setting is an invitation to journey between tradition and modernity, between the continent’s rich cultural heritage and the clean lines of contemporary design.   Toubab Signaré Ibrahima Gnigue
