From engineer to artist...
Tasneem is a Sudanese mechanical engineer, poet and artist. Sudan has a complex history marked by prolonged conflict. The conflicts in Sudan have had dramatic consequences, resulting in loss of life, mass displacement of populations and repeated humanitarian crises. Tasneem is the author of an innovative book of poetry, combining mandalas (see article: 5 keys to understanding the mandala) and lyrical verse; she has also taken part in numerous art exhibitions.
Through her process of self-healing, she has found serenity in the mandala. The lines, curves and dots serve as guides towards self-integration and a state of calm. Armed with a simple pen and a sheet of paper, she creates dialogues, dancing to the rhythm of the music. This creative process has sustained her during times of anxiety, fatigue, professional pressure, exhaustion and throughout the COVID-19 lockdown. Whenever she draws, she cuts herself off from the outside world, allowing her senses to merge with the ink and paper.
She immerses herself in an environment where only ambient noise remains, where her sense of smell mingles with the surrounding scents, and where she lets herself be carried away by a gentle melody that transcends the world she creates. Determined to help others, she offers her drawings for colouring as a form of art therapy. Her research shows that colouring intricate patterns boosts energy, strengthens hope and self-awareness, improves decision-making and concentration, reduces anxiety, and alleviates the symptoms of psychological trauma, depression and stress.
The post-COVID era has heightened awareness of the importance of mental health and self-care. She therefore seizes the opportunity to share the therapeutic power of Mandala art through workshops and colouring books, helping others to create their own inner world through drawing and colouring. Every piece she shares becomes a unique work of art, reflecting the personality of the person who coloured it. Participants leave with an enriching personal experience and an original work of art, whilst she delights in being an ambassador for inner peace and love.
